just want to get a quick understanding of the ASM. i am aware that the Automatic Storage Management (ASM) is somewhat the volume manager and a file system for oracle database files.

there was an error about
ORA-01653: unable to extend table ODI.C$_CMS_EXPEND by 4096 in tablespace ODIDEV

then somehow this was fixed by adding a new datafile for the tablespace ODIDEV. i checked that the datafile has this naming convention in number format.

+DATA0010/app/datafile/odi_dev.221.56009514

i was wondering if the ASM automatically created the datafile. just want to know if the ASM can and has the functionality to automatically create the datafile.

thank you,
warren

No, ASM will never create a file automatically. Either someone added the file, or perhaps you have some maintenance jpb configured to detect and fix tablespace full issues.
